Today (or yesterday because it is early morning) my IBM X40 laptop arrived. There is no CD-ROM drive within it so I used an USB stick to install Debian Sarge which installed with no problems. I used a guide on found on Debian-Installer website.
I have also checked on http://linux-laptop.net/ for info about my new laptop.
I deletede Windows XP and the IBM rescue partition… though no CD-ROM’s with this software came along with the laptop. I’ll have to find out how to get it back… not because I’m going to use it but now that I payed for it I’ll like to have it
No I’m off to bed… got a though day tomorrow. I’m on a crappy organized assignment (partly my own fault) and I think I’m starting to grow grey hair because I’m missed my beauty sleep for some days now.
After working alot on-site I found it necessary to buy a laptop. My top demands for a laptop ordered by importance:
- quality
- 12″ screen
- long battry time
- not to heavy (well not many if any 12″ laptops are)
- style
I had a hard time choosing between an Apple Powerbook and IBM Thinkpad but I ended up with a IBM X40 Thinkpad with 512MB RAM 8 cell battery (7.5 hours working time). It also has a build in wireless card supporting the a, b, and g standard, a 10/100/1000 ethernet card and bluetooth. What more can a geek like me wish for
Apple is also cool and I relly – I mean RELLY like the look and feel of a Power Book and OSX. Apple have great taste in style, and I just love the eye-candy. Now GNU/Linux and GNOME have to do… not that thats going to be a problem, me beeing a Linux and GNOME lover
Yesterday I recieved my my TFT monitor which I had been looking forward to all day. While I unwrapped this super slim eight wonder of the world I thought: “This really rocks”!
And I did… until I discovered a pixel error on the monitor
Monday I will send it back and order a new one
Finnaly I pulled myself together and found a TFT monitor. I have looked on severel but I ended up buying a Samsung 172X because it think it was the best preforming and looking monitor I could find for the price. The Samsung 710T was also a candidate with slightly better specs but it looked ugly IMO.
My new TFT monitor is to replace my old CRT Samsung SyncMaster 959NF which still works. But it is quite big and after the last netparty I attended it got a scratch
I’m looking forward to friday where it should arrive
I have been planing to put a file section on my website for some time now. Earlier I just posted files in my weblog but evntually they dissapear into the archives of the weblog and therefore not easily accessable. From now on I will put files in my new file section if their relevance is beyond a single post in my blog.
For the file section I have found some code on phpclasses.
The FileDB class stores and retrives files from a database and the class uses the AnyDB class which is a compatibility layer which allows you to use all sorts of databases (I use MySQL).
To celebrate the opening of my new section I have posted my first file…
The OpenOffice.org logo in svg. After spending many hours looking for this logo in the SVG format I got the EPS version taken from Version 1.1 Logos and CD Materials converted by a friend in Adobe Illustrator (AI). AI was capeable of doing this without errors unlike pstoedit. Se my post: OpenOffice.org logo.
After reading Random thought: Art of computer naming and Random thought: Art of computer naming, part 2 I wrote Lars Wirzenius to tell him about the names I use at work if he ever was to make a part 3
(All this happend a while back while my server was down – 29 April)
For those of you who just can’t wait for a part 3 I use fable animals and I have put a list together here.

The reason for the break down was not big (at least not in gigabyte). It was an old IDE 1.8GB Maxtor harddisk which contained my server OS, homepages and databases. Thank god I have recovered all my data. It is impossible to boot from the harddisk and data transfers are very slow sometimes unstable. It has now been replaced by two 200GB Seagate disks. They are supposed to run RAID1 but so far only a data drive with the websites and the databases is a RAID partition.
For the RAID I used the following debian packages: mdadm and `raidtools2.
Use google to find some guides…
Stay tuned for updates… I have been away for while
Today i played around with syslogd and here is what I learned:
To enable syslog to recieve logs from remote machines you have to give the syslogd an -r parameter. I Debian you have edit /etc/inet.d/syslogd to enable remote logging. A bug has allready been filed about this #205239
On other systems like RedHat you can configure it in /etc/sysconfig/syslog where you set SYSLOGD_PARAMS=”-r”
Now restart syslog with:
machine:~# /etc/init.d/sysklogd restart
To configure the clients edit /etc/syslog.conf:
#Remote logging to 10.0.0.5
*.* @10.0.0.5
And restart syslog like above (now on you client).
NOTE – You can only have comments on newlines. This example is WRONG!!
*.* @10.0.0.5 #My log machine<
Just found out about this x86 emulator: Bochs. Now I can try the new Debian installer and perhapes test Debian Woody things without messing around with my desktop machine (Debian unstable).
This is a guide in danish about Bochs
Today I found some time to try out Rhythmbox the music player inspired by iTunes. I had head that it was good… and so far I’m not dissapointed.
This cool player made me want some new music so I surfed the net for some new stuff. My music taste is pretty broard so I ended up with this:
Mew – Frengers (cdon)
Creed – Weathered (cdon)
Oasis – Heathen Chemistry (cdon)
Black Eyed Peas – Elephunk (cd-wow)
Britney Spears – In The Zone (cd-wow)
It is really crappy that CD-WOW had to raise their prices… yes I know why but it’s still sad. Now that I found a job so I can actually buy my music they go and pull a stunt like this.
CD-WOW has far from all music so I have to supplement with CDON ( a nordic online music reseller).
I have to look for some price indexes and alternative sites to buy music so that I can get it as cheap as possible
Another thing I don’t like is the fact that I haven’t found a decent download music shop to use. TDC has started a music shop but it only works in IE and with Windows Media Player AFAIK
Crap site!
I want to buy my music! Why do they have to make it so hard?
